Health department urges people to remain masked while indoors

The El Paso County Department of Public Health strongly recommends wearing a mask in public indoor settings — regardless of vaccination status — in alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations.

As of Monday, Dec. 20, 1,354 people have died of the coronavirus in the county since March 1, 2020.

People aged 80 to 89 continue to lead all other age groups, with 382 deaths. That’s 35 percent of the total deaths, despite being just 2.4 percent of the local population.

The county has experienced a total of 118,085 cases since March 2020. The health department calls 114,791 of those “recovered,” with 1,641 still “active.”

People living in the 80829 ZIP code have taken 7,933 tests for the coronavirus, with 562 positive results.

Vaccine and testing sites at The Citadel mall and Chapel Hills Mall will be open for their usual hours Friday, Dec. 24, but all community-based vaccine and testing sites will be closed Christmas Day.
