The Manitou Springs Fire Department is asking residents and visitors to refrain from shooting off fireworks before, during and after the holiday. That’s for our safety — think missing fingers and burning hillsides. Even though we’ve had a lot of moisture lately, we still need to be careful. Plus, they’re illegal.

However, opportunities for family-friendly fun on the Fourth of July abound in the area. Here are a few:

Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site will host its annual Family Fourth event. It will include speeches by re-enactors channeling President Theodore Roosevelt, Katharine Lee Bates and other famous people of the past, live music, carnival games, wagon rides and the Seven Falls Indian Dancers. Admission tickets available here. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday. 3105 Gateway Road. Information on the RLR website.

The Pikes Peak Library District is hosting programs and opportunities at facilities around the area. They include Kids Take and Make firework crowns and giveaways of pocket U.S. Constitution books and flags. Check out the library website for more information.

The Manitou Springs Heritage Center and Museum will host local author Becky Van Vleet, who will speak about her book, “Unintended Hero,” which recounts her father’s service during World War II. Copies will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation. 6-7 p.m. Friday, July 7. 517 Manitou Ave. Information on the MSHC website.
