The Arts Uprise Festival is your best alternative to doomscrolling

Several local and regional arts organizations, artists, actors, directors, playwrights, a musician and a poet laureate have joined forces for The Arts Uprise Festival.

Billed as “your best alternative to doomscrolling,” this creative tsunami teams the Millibo Art Theatre, the host venue, with original plays penned by Colorado playwrights, music by singer-songwriter John Spengler, poet Ashley Cornelius, and visual art curated by Auric Gallery.

The festival will run at 7:30 p.m. on June 20 and 21, and 2 p.m. on June 22.

Each of these works – which touch on politics, climate change, immigration and bleak possible futures – speaks to this moment in America, expressing the frustration, outrage, grief, and hope that so many of us feel.

“I see The Arts Uprise as a movement of artists screaming for expression, but also as an invitation. We want to create a new sandbox where anyone can play,” said playwright and journalist Warren Epstein, who co-founded the group with longtime theater professionals Kathy Paradise and Melissa Hafter. “We’re hoping we can do another festival at a different venue in the fall and that other arts organizations create their own Uprise things.”

Tickets for The Arts Uprise Festival are on sale now at TheMAT.org.
