If you’ve ever longed to create a monster, here’s your chance to do just that.

The Manitou Monster Project is inviting local adult artists to collaborate with kindergartners at Manitou Springs Elementary School to bring their original monster drawings to life.

The grownups are free to use their own style and favorite medium to create a new piece of art.

Adult artists can sign up by emailing manitoumonsterproject@gmail.com by Tuesday, Aug. 1. Selected artists will receive a digital image of the child’s drawing, along with any additional information they provide. The adults’ monsters, which can be two- or three-dimensional, are due to be completed by Friday, Sept. 1.

The results, both original monster drawings and the adults’ work, will be displayed at the elementary school. An opening reception will take place 5-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6.

Artists will be asked to donate their creations to the Manitou Monster Project so that 100 percent of the proceeds can support Manitou art education programs.

GUIDELINES FOR GROWNUPS
  • Participating adult artists must be 18 years or older.
  • Artists will be encouraged to have fun creating monsters while making a quality piece that can stand the test of time.
  • Don’t use trash or anything perishable to build or decorate the monster.
  • Don’t use tape or hot glue; these materials are not secure.
  • Finished pieces should be a maximum of 10 inches high, 10 inches wide and 6 inches deep.
  • Pieces must be ready to hang; if they are three-dimensional, they should be able to stand on their own or have a hanging system that can attach to a wall. For instance, textile monsters could have a loop attached to their head or back.

The Manitou Monster Project is funded by the Manitou Arts, Culture, and Heritage initiative.
