Concrete Couch is currently focusing on the Concrete Coyote community park (1100 S. Royer, COS).

At Concrete Couch, community is the heart of our mission. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering creativity and collaboration, we focus on sustainability practices that not only enrich our projects but also strengthen the bonds within our community. Through the innovative use of recycled materials, we are paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future – together.

Our commitment to sustainability starts with sourcing and repurposing a wide array of materials. We actively seek out recycled items, paint, and art supplies to integrate into our projects. By doing so, we not only reduce waste but also demonstrate that “junk” can be transformed into something beautiful and functional. This philosophy was exemplified in our project at the Helen Hunt Playground in the Hillside Neighborhood, where we salvaged secondhand playground equipment to create a vibrant play space for children. The playground stands as a testament to our belief that, with a little creativity, we can turn discarded items into valuable assets for our community.

Currently, we are channeling our sustainability efforts into the Concrete Coyote community park, a sprawling 7-acre green space designed to serve as a hub for community activities and events. Our approach to building this park involves utilizing donated goods and recycled materials, such as metals and wood, to construct functional and aesthetically pleasing features. This not only minimizes our environmental footprint but also showcases the power of collaboration and resourcefulness in creating spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Our core beliefs guide every project we undertake:

1. Community matters: We understand that the essence of community is found in the places where we gather, share and create. Unfortunately, such spaces are dwindling, and we strive to build new ones while revitalizing existing locations.

2. Making things is fun work: Creativity is a fundamental human force that connects us to our true selves. At Concrete Couch, we emphasize that the process of making things – whether it’s a playground, park feature or art installation – is as fulfilling as the end product.

3. Junk is just raw material waiting for an idea: We’re constantly amazed at what can be achieved with items that would otherwise end up in landfills. Our team sees potential everywhere, transforming discarded materials into treasures.

4. Every community has strengths, assets and resources: We love uncovering the unique resources within our community. By creating venues for sharing skills, knowledge and tools, we empower individuals to collaborate and innovate.

5. Sharing things with others makes people happier: The act of sharing – be it food, music, tools, or knowledge – fosters connection and joy. We thrive on the happiness that comes from exchanging our gifts with one another.

6. People who feel valued contribute more: There’s a certain magic that happens when individuals are given the right tools, engaging projects and supportive environments. We witness incredible transformations when people feel appreciated and inspired to contribute.

7. Getting dirty is liberating: Our most memorable experiences often involve a bit of mess – dirt, dust, paint and glue. We embrace the chaos of creativity and understand that making a mess is part of the journey toward creating something functional and beautiful.

Through our sustainable practices, Concrete Couch is not just building parks and playgrounds; we are fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity and community resilience. By repurposing materials, engaging volunteers and bringing in the community with classes and fun events, we create not only physical spaces but also connections that bring people together. We invite you to join us on this journey – whether through volunteering, donating, attending a class or simply sharing our mission. Together, we can build a more sustainable and vibrant community for all.
