The Manitou Springs girls golf team put together another solid tournament to finish second in the Tri-Peaks League.

The Mustangs finished second in all three Tri-Peaks tournaments this year, including the final one on May 10 in Trinidad. The Salida Spartans won all three league tournaments to claim the team title.

When factoring in all three league tournaments, Manitou finished the year with three all-conference players.

Madison Sharon finished fourth in the Tri-Peaks, thanks in big part to shooting a 20-over-par 92 in Trinidad. She tied with teammate Tyler Parratt in the league standings, but Sharon won the scorecard playoff, placing Parratt fifth. Parratt shot a 103 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for sixth. Anna Apotheker rounded out the all-conference honors, taking 10th.

Tuesday’s tournament was a big measuring stick for the team’s development and it showed that the Mustangs have come a long way since the start of the season.

“It was a lot better,” coach Ken Vecchio said. “We were comparing it to Salida, who got us pretty good in the first two tournaments. Tuesday, they beat us by nine.”

The Mustangs now turn their attention to regionals, as they’ll try to send some qualifiers to the state tournament at the Broadlands in Broomfield. Parratt qualified for last year’s tournament at Elmwood, so she’s hoping to make a return to state. With the way the others have played, it’s not out of the question for Manitou to send multiple players to Broomfield.

They have the Rye Invite at Hollydot on Friday, May 13, which will hopefully get them prepared for regionals.

“I think the girls are hitting the ball really good,” Vecchio said. “We just have to put a lot of emphasis on chipping and putting.”

If they can tighten up the short game, it could make for a fun couple of days at the Broadlands when the calendar turns to June.
