Feb. 28

Manitou Springs Police officers responded to an unattended death reported in the 100 block of Manitou Avenue. They found the body of an older male and Manitou Springs Fire Department personnel confirmed he was deceased. The investigation has been referred to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office; at this time, foul play is not suspected.

A license plate was destroyed, apparently just to remove the expiration tags, in the 100 block of Deer Path.

March 1

Officers responded to a cold vehicle theft from the parking lot at 65 Beckers Lane. No suspect information is available, but video footage will be collected if possible.

March 2

In the 3700 block of West Colorado Avenue, while searching for illegal camps, Manitou officers contacted a female suspect with a local misdemeanor warrant. She was taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

March 3

MSPD responded to a report of possible domestic violence in the 00 block of El Paso Boulevard. Upon arrival, the officers could hear yelling from inside the home. They discovered a family member having a series of seizures, and he was transported to a local hospital.

Officers contacted a person at their residence in the 100 block of Manitou Avenue to serve a misdemeanor warrant. The warrant was served and the person was released.

March 4

The license plates, title and registration were stolen from a car in the 900 block of High Street.

A juvenile is being investigated for simple assault in the 400 block of El Monte Place.

Officers responded to the 00 block of Fountain Place after a disturbance was reported. They conducted an investigation on scene and determined that nothing criminal had occurred.

March 5

MSPD responded to a non-injury traffic accident between two vehicles in the 100 block of Manitou Avenue. Everyone involved was able to provide their driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance. After an investigation, the at-fault driver was cited and released. Both vehicles were able to drive away from the scene.

At 1417 hours, officers attempted to stop a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Waltham Avenue. The driver didn’t stop and drove recklessly to elude police. Later, officers saw the driver walking along Midland Avenue, pursued him on foot and took him into custody in the 900 block of Manitou Avenue. He had methamphetamine, more than $500 in cash and a loaded handgun. The suspect was booked into CJC on multiple felony charges.

MSPD responded to the report of a stolen vehicle seen in the 100 block of Waltham Avenue. The suspect was located and found to have a felony warrant for his arrest. He was booked into CJC.
At 2230 hours, officers responded to a disturbance at a motel in the 00 block of Manitou Avenue. The suspect was cited for disorderly conduct and obstructing police, and transported to a local shelter.

March 6

MSPD responded to a traffic accident with vehicle damage in the 300 block of Ruxton Avenue. One of the vehicles involved was a Manitou Springs parking enforcement vehicle.

COURT UPDATE

According to the Colorado Judicial Branch’s online docket, Matthew Barton, a former Manitou Springs High School teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, March 15.

Timothy Hilt, a former MSHS teacher also accused of sexually assaulting a student, will be in court for a disposition hearing on Thursday, March 24.

Ashlynne Perez pleaded guilty to criminally negligent child abuse resulting in death and is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday, March 24. Her 4-year-old son accidentally shot himself in the head July 6 outside a Manitou business.

Her husband, Carlos Perez, is scheduled to be arraigned (formal reading of charges) on Friday, March 18.
