To the editor:
Upwards of 75 percent of the voters, me included, opposed the recent ballot question about adding a third marijuana store in town.
I hope that City Council will view this election result as a rebuke of one proprietor undertaking an initiative to allow a third store in a narrow section of town where it would be the only viable candidate for the additional license.
I also hope that council will not jump to the conclusion that Manitou voters are against additional stores in town. It disturbs me that council recently approved a resolution that asserted that the voters made their position on limiting the number of establishments to two clear in a 2014 vote, before any marijuana establishments were in town.
Eight years is a long period of time for opinions to evolve, especially when we have now lived with two marijuana stores for several years. I encourage council to be open-minded regarding adding more stores and to take the pulse of Manitou voters on this issue.
After all, hundreds of Manitou voters signed the petition that brought the recent ballot measure before us.
