This November, voters in the Manitou Springs School District 14 will consider a $37.6 million bond measure (ballot measure 4C) that represents a pivotal investment in the future of our schools – and, more importantly, in  the success, safety, and well-being of our students.

Our district hasn’t passed a bond since 2000. We currently carry no bond debt, and while we have worked  diligently to maintain our facilities, the reality is that our buildings, on average, are over 60 years old and are  aging beyond their capacity to serve the evolving needs of our learners. Our newest building, the SILC, is now  25 years old. The time to reinvest is now.

4C is focused on three critical areas: safety and security, accessibility, and priority infrastructure. These are  not luxuries – they are essential needs that directly impact our students’ ability to learn in safe and supportive environments.

Safety and security

In today’s world, ensuring our schools are secure is not optional. This bond will fund urgent safety upgrades,  including safe and secure school entries, improved security cameras, and fire detection systems. When our  students and staff feel safe, they can focus on what matters most: teaching and learning.

Accessibility for all

Every student deserves a learning environment that is inclusive and accessible. Currently, our facilities and  outdoor spaces do not meet ADA standards. This bond will fund essential ADA-compliant entrances, restrooms,  and classroom features to ensure all students can learn in safe, accessible environments.

Infrastructure that supports learning

Much of our critical infrastructure, such as HVAC systems, electrical systems, and plumbing, has exceeded its  expected lifespan. Failure to act now will lead to more costly breakdowns in the future and divert funds from  directly serving students. Additionally, bond funds will support updated learning spaces to meet the needs of  our students.

Responsible investment

If approved, 4C will cost homeowners approximately $7.04 per month per $100,000 of home value, an  investment with a significant return. By addressing these foundational needs now, we can avoid more costly  emergency repairs in the future and ensure our students have the environment they need to thrive.

This bond is not about extravagance; it’s about safety and security, accessibility, and infrastructure, for this  generation of learners and the next. I invite every member of our community to learn more, ask questions, and  participate in this important decision. Together, let’s continue building a strong foundation for D14’s future.

Sincerely,

Sean Dorsey, Superintendent of Schools-Manitou Springs School District 14
