Lauren Nelson was sworn in to the El Paso County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, replacing Cami Bremer, who resigned earlier this month.
Appointed by a vote of the local Republican Party, she fills the District 5 seat vacated by Cami Bremer, who was selected in September last year to serve as CEO of Pikes Peak United Way.
District 5 covers much of central Colorado Springs.
Bremer stayed on as a commissioner until earlier this month, resigning after Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill into law in May, changing the way vacancies on county commissions are filled. She said she stayed on at the Commission while also working at United Way – and drawing two salaries – to make sure that voters got to choose her successor.
Under the new rules, Nelson will have to run for election in November of this year. Previously, she would have remained in the seat until the next scheduled election, which, in this case, would have been in November 2026.
She has said she believes in limited government, fiscal responsibility, and government transparency and accountability.
Nelson grew up in Colorado Springs, before going to Colorado State University, where she graduated with a B.S. in Nutrition and Food Science. She worked as a food scientist for major corporations before becoming a stay-at-home mother.
She also volunteers on the board of Quaker Ridge Camp & Conference Center, and plays violin with the Pikes Peak Philharmonic.
Both of her children attend public schools in Colorado Springs, and Nelson was elected to the District 11 school board in 2021. She has not yet decided if she’ll serve her full term on the school board, which ends in December, according to media reports.
