Colorado Springs firefighters have recovered a man’s body from a pond at Red Rock Canyon Open Space.
The mission started the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 17, when firefighters were called about a person who had gone into the water and never re-emerged.
A witness told them the person had fallen down a rock face, went into the water and didn’t resurface. The pond is between the Red Rock Canyon and Greenlee trails near the park’s main parking lot.
Eight divers were on the search and rescue team, and the Colorado Springs Police Department provided drones to assist with the search.
After 90 minutes with no results, firefighters switched to a recovery operation, using a boat equipped with sonar to focus on the area where the person was seen going into the water.
At about 1 a.m. Wednesday, CSFD temporarily called off the search because it was too dark. They resumed searching mid-morning Wednesday and pulled the body from the water just after 10:30 a.m.
The victim has not been identified as of press time.
