On Oct. 4, Manitou Springs Elementary School held a viewing of the 2nd annual Manitou Monster Project. Artists, students and parents gathered to admire this whimsical community collaboration. Art teacher Carrie Dunlap and project organizer Nicki Noe were on hand to host the event.

Last year, as part of a MACH (Manitou Arts, Culture, and Heritage board) grant, kindergarten classes from Manitou Springs Elementary School created a monster in art class. Dunlap guided students in drawing their monsters and assigning fun monster facts such as what the monster likes, eats and how it feels. Artists in the community were then asked to use their own unique style and medium to recreate a new piece of art inspired by the child’s original piece. The show featured both the original child-drawn monsters and the work by the adult artists, to the delight of all who attended. The show will be on display at the Manitou Springs Elementary School through the end of October.

If you are an artist who may want to participate next year, follow manitoumonsterproject on Instagram for all updates. The call for artists is typically in June, with monsters due in August.
