How does one begin to write about something as important as their local newspaper? Well, carefully, I suppose. Methodically, thoughtfully and maybe even cleverly.

No pressure there. Ha!

Ironically, I write this little review, endorsement or celebratory musing on April Fool’s Day, so I must make sure to stay extra-focused. My mind as been writing bad jokes all day that I will never share or post.

But it is tempting to write something completely ridiculous and then at the end of it ask for some sort of forgiveness as this won’t be read until a week after our nonsensical holiday is behind us.

But seriously, though, I have been reading the Pikes Peak Bulletin since I rolled into Manitou Springs more than 21 years ago after an amazing, productive and fruitful adventure in New York.

Just simply delightful!

I left Southern Colorado in the late 1980s and got to live all over the United States and travel the world!

After a fateful run-in with my childhood sweetheart, I decided to pack up my home in Brooklyn and business on the Lower East Side. I moved back West to marry Jeana Farrell and make Manitou Springs my forever home.

You see, I grew up in our sister town of Colorado Springs, and spent many wonderful hours here either filling jugs of mineral water for my grandmother or investigating abandoned houses (witch-hunting, if I’m completely honest).

I was absolutely intrigued and excited about coming back to my humble beginnings. I have so many wonderful memories of our little town growing up I couldn’t even begin to write about them all. But the point of these ramblings?

Well, I sat down, truly uninterrupted, last week (the first time in a LONG time) and literally read our local paper all the way through, line by line, word by word, (ads and all!) and I have to say it was the best issue I can ever remember!

No, it didn’t have me or Sunwater Spa in it, or my son’s athletic or academic accomplishments, but it just felt so NEW and FRESH, easy to read and just simply delightful!

I’m not sure specifically and exactly why I couldn’t put it down but when I finally did, I had the most overwhelming sense sense of gratitude and accomplishment I have ever had about a newspaper.

I guess I just got caught up on the most magnificent little mountain town in North America. And do I say this as a world traveler, cultural aficionado and relatively well-informed citizen. So there.

Blessings to the new team dedicated to keeping print alive. Keep writing, PPB, and I’ll keep reading!!!!!
