To further promote tree planting and friendly landscapes within Manitou Springs, the city will host a silent auction for 20 planks of Siberian elm wood 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, at City Hall, 606 Manitou Ave.
The proceeds will be split 50/50 for gardening and tree planting through the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
The wood originates from the 12 trees removed for the Beckers Lane infrastructure improvement project.
“Although the removal of trees is our last resort, it is great to see these Siberian elm trees become useful for planting more trees and gardens within Manitou Springs,” Mayor John Graham said.
The Colorado Springs Sawmill at Penrose milled and kiln-dried the wood, which the Manitou Springs Urban Renewal Authority paid for. The planks are approximately 2 inches thick and vary in sizes and shapes, but range from 4 to 8 feet long.
