To the editor:

Conjecture: an opinion or conclusion formed based on incomplete information. Similar: guess, speculation, suspicion.

Recently there have been multiple social media posts as well as opinions in the Pikes Peak Bulletin commenting on the state of affairs in Manitou Springs School District 14. The speculative nature of these comments from a few implies that the entire district is in disarray and that all employees are unhappy and living in a state of fear.

I have worked for the district for almost 10 years and am fortunate to work in all the schools. I graduated from Manitou Springs High School, as did my two sons. I get what makes our school district special.

I confess that I am very frustrated with the entire district continually being thrown under the bus based on the conjecture of these comments.

The demands on public schools have grown exponentially. The past few years with COVID-19 has compounded those demands. Public schools must do more with less. That can mean both money and staffing.

Those who work in a school district don’t do it for the money, power or distinction. They do it because they love kids and want to contribute to their education.

This can mean the teachers, administrators, paraeducators, mental health teams, buildings and grounds, food service, technology, etc. Staff in this district work tirelessly to help our students succeed every day.

Amazing things are happening in each of the buildings and students are excelling in many areas, such as science, construction, robotics, AP classes, the arts, athletics, and the list goes on! This is all powered by staffers who continually comment that one of the best parts of working here are the amazing people they work with.

MSSD14 has not lost its luster. Some are just not looking at what makes it shine.

Respectfully,

Christina Baker
