Ute Pass Elementary fifth- and sixth-grade runners are off! How many laps will they run in 40 minutes? The record for the school is around 60 laps — almost 8 miles.

Ute Pass Elementary School is a small school in Chipita Park that’s part of Manitou Springs District 14. UPES serves preschoolers through sixth graders from the historic communities of Cascade, Chipita Park, Green Mountain Falls and Crystola.

In the words of Principal Jackie Powell, “Ute Pass Elementary is a true gem, with a culture that is unsurpassable. In a society where many children are ingrained all day in technology, students at Ute Pass are able to experience and drive their own learning through collaboration, inquiry, and exploration.”

UPES takes environmental learning to the next level with the award-winning “Mountain Academy of Arts & Sciences,” a program for sixth graders. The school’s staff extends education far beyond classroom walls, and fosters an inclusive environment, creating a safe place for all students to find and use their voice.
