Dear readers,
“Word is the PPB is the best paper in the area now.”
That lovely compliment was in an email from a reader recently – and it wasn’t a one-off. We’ve been hearing from many of you that the Bulletin is your favorite newspaper. It is deeply gratifying to know this is a publication you look forward to reading every week because we bring you stories that inform and connect you to the people, institutions and world around you.
We hear that you love seeing renowned investigative journalist Pam Zubeck back in print with her column for the Bulletin, “Pam Zubeck has a few questions,” and how much you appreciate Heidi Beedle’s public affairs reporting.
You enjoy reading John Hazlehurst’s musings – and he’s really gotten your attention lately with his memoirs. It was a treat to read longtime city leader Richard Skorman’s series of essays on Colorado Springs and his ideas to build a more sustainable future.
You appreciate our regular features on environmental stewardship, which is an area we have plans to expand significantly.
You want more of the articles by students from Manitou Springs High School (and more is coming soon!) just as you look forward to the sports coverage that celebrates youth athletic achievements. We are looking to expand this type of coverage as well as we now officially cover Colorado Springs.
Our new reporter Abbey Soukup leads our expanded community section with profiles of local businesses, nonprofits and grassroots groups that are interesting and engaging; our arts and entertainment coverage (another high-growth area for the paper, with bylines including Warren Epstein and Nick Raven) makes you want to get out and experience the creativity and fun to be had.
And some of you really, really like the Police Beat.
You write thoughtful, insightful letters to the editor and guest columns. You read others’ perspectives and respond with your own. You send in tips and story ideas, as well as feedback on how we could do better because you want to see the Bulletin be the best paper it can be. That is what we all want. That is what our community needs, and deserves.
It is an honor to do this work. But it’s also an incredibly tough industry. Newspapers all over the nation are collapsing, including here in Colorado. We don’t want that to happen to the Bulletin and we know you don’t, either.
We are seeking grant funding and to grow our advertising revenue, but at this time that’s still an effort and not a reality. We really need subscribers and donors to come forward now.
The Bulletin is taking part in the Give! campaign from today through Jan. 3. Please make a donation as you are able at Campaign.GivePikesPeak.org/nonprofit/pikes-peak-bulletin or by scanning the QR code in the ad above.
From what some call the “best paper in the area” to you, who are definitely the best readers: thank you.
