Consistency is something that generally can’t be found in totality on a golf course. But for Davis Mack and the Manitou Springs boys golf team, finding a little bit of it can go a long way with the season hitting a very crucial point.
On Friday, Sept. 17, the Mustangs head to Hollydot Golf Course in Colorado City for their final Tri-Peaks League tournament of the season. They got themselves a quick tune-up at the course during the Rye Invite on Sept. 14 and came away with an impressive result.
The Mustangs won the event as a team as their top three guys, Davis Mack, Alex Hansen and Jack Clifford all shot under 90.
Mack led the way with a 9-over-par 80, which was good enough for second place. He has struggled with keeping consistency on either the front or back 9 of his rounds, but feels like he’s starting to tighten up everything with regionals approaching.
“I’m more consistent than I was about two weeks ago,” Mack said. “I haven’t been hitting as many bad shots as I have been. My misses are good misses.”
The overall result is very encouraging for the Mustangs. The scores are staying low and with regionals set for next week, the idea of all three players qualifying for the state meet is suddenly becoming very real.
“I’d love to have that,” Mack said. “If Jack keeps playing the way he’s been playing — he’s been kicking butt lately — and so does Alex, I think we can do it.
“Those guys have been grinding just as much as me and they’ve been helping us get those top-fives and top-twos as a team.”
The Mustangs wrap up Tri-Peaks play on Friday, Sept. 17, then head to Aurora for regionals on Monday, Sept. 20.
