March 7

A juvenile was involved in a simple assault case in the 400 block of El Monte Place.

Manitou Springs Police officers investigated an illegal camp near Ridge Road and U.S. Highway 24. The camp’s occupant was wanted on an El Paso County felony warrant.

March 9

A wallet was turned in at the MSPD lobby. Officers attempted to contact its owner but could not. It has been placed into evidence for safekeeping.

March 10

MSPD was dispatched to assist the Manitou Springs Fire Department with a child who had fallen off a bed and was unconscious. The child had regained consciousness when units arrived on scene. MSFD did an evaluation and decided to transport the child to a local hospital.

At 1835 hours, officers were sent to the 800 block of Prospect Place to check the welfare of a person involved in a disturbance in Colorado Springs. The person was contacted by phone and the case was handed off to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

March 11

Manitou officers assisted another agency with a “cruelty toward child” case in the 6200 block of Aspen Ridge Road.

At 1900 hours, MSPD officers were patrolling on foot in the 900 block of Manitou Avenue when they contacted a person wanted on a local misdemeanor warrant. The suspect was served a new court date and released.

March 12

Officers responded to a disturbance in the 900 block of Manitou Avenue at 0003 hours. One person involved was vague about providing information and the other involved people left the scene before MSPD arrived.

MSPD responded to a disturbance in the 900 block of Manitou Avenue at 0217 hours. A woman had assaulted another woman in a bar. Officers contacted the suspect and conducted an on-scene investigation. The suspect was cited for third-degree assault and released.

A disturbance was reported in the 00 block of Manitou Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered that it was a physical confrontation between roommates. One person had minor injuries and requested transport to a local hospital. The people involved decided to separate.

March 13

Officers patrolling downtown observed a vehicle driving east with its headlights off. They stopped it in the 400 block of Manitou Avenue; the driver showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol and was arrested.

At 0330 hours, officers responded to a disturbance reported in the area of Narrows Road and Cañon Avenue. One of the people involved had an El Paso County felony warrant and was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

A traffic accident occurred near Highway 24 and Serpentine Drive, and MSPD responded at 1818 hours. While en route to the scene, officers observed one of the involved vehicles traveling east at Serpentine and Manitou Avenue. The vehicle was damaged in such a way that it was sliding all over the road, almost striking parked cars. Officers stopped the vehicle and the driver spoke with the officer briefly before driving away. They followed and the vehicle stopped after about one block. The officers initiated a felony stop, but the driver did not comply; instead, he fled the vehicle on foot. After a brief chase, officers took him into custody. The driver was issued a summons for various charges and began making suicidal statements, so he was placed on a mental health hold and transported to a hospital.

At 1830 hours, MSPD responded to a traffic accident at Highway 24 and Serpentine Drive. The drivers were identified and vehicle information was exchanged.

Officers responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of Manitou Avenue at 1938 hours. A man was reportedly attacked by several other people, who fled in a vehicle. MSPD searched for the vehicle but couldn’t locate it. The victim denied needing medical attention. There is no suspect information, but the investigation continues.

COURT UPDATE

According to the Colorado Judicial Branch’s online docket, Matthew Barton, a former Manitou Springs High School teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, April 12.

Timothy Hilt, a former MSHS teacher also accused of sexually assaulting a student, will be in court for a disposition hearing on Thursday, March 24.

Ashlynne Perez pleaded guilty to criminally negligent child abuse resulting in death and is scheduled for a sentencing hearing Thursday, March 24. Her 4-year-old son accidentally shot himself in the head July 6 outside a Manitou business.

Her husband, Carlos Perez, is scheduled to be arraigned (formal reading of charges) on Friday, March 18.
