Did you see the latest off-the-cuff remarks by Vice President and presumptive 2028 presidential nominee JD Vance?
He was doing an interview at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in California, and suggested the late, great President Richard Nixon got a raw deal.
In doing that, an extraordinary thing.
āIām actually fascinated by Nixon as a character in history,ā he said. āI think that his historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, but I think deservedly so. As I joked with Robert backstage, if Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12-hour news story. Like, the idea that it would have taken down a presidency is crazy.āĀ
This is shocking. Not that Vance would believe Nixon got mistreated and that his crimes were too mild to be of consequence, because his so-called convictions sway with the tide.
That he would say this out loud, on camera! Wow. Maybe he didnāt mean to suggest it the way I heard it. But the fact of the matter is that heās right.
The Watergate break-in and the following coverup, which, prior to Trump, had been considered the greatest American presidential scandal of my lifetime, would hardly be considered news these days.
Why do you think that might be, JD?
Maybe because the president he worships and enables is a convicted felon, found guilty by a jury of his peers. He was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in New York state court related to efforts to cover up an alleged affair with a porn star.
But of course, thatās just the tip of a grotesquely bloated iceberg.
He was twice impeached for threatening to withhold military aid to Ukraine if they didnāt announce an investigation of Joe Biden and for inciting a crowd to storm the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Both impeachments were overturned by his Republican cronies.
The grift that continues to go on every day with this administration, whether itās gifts from foreign governments, bitcoin cons, gold sneakers , UFC fights. ā¦Ā
Then thereās the Epstein Files and the sexual scandals. The mainstream media has almost given up covering the scandals upon scandals of this administration because you donāt cover the sun coming up in the morning.
But Vance wasnāt done.
āAnd by the way, if you look at the story of how the Deep State took down Richard Nixon, itās not all that different from what the same groups of people, the same institutions tried to do to Donald Trump and the first Trump administration. There is a parallel.ā
Again, heās right. If youāre talking about the Deep State being Congress, the Justice Department, the Supreme Court and the many bureaucrats in the machinery of serving the people before they were all co-opted by Trump, there sure are parallels.
But to be fair to Nixon, he was no Trump.
Nixon was a politician who became a crook. Trump is a crook who became a politician.
Now, Trump is focused on his ballroom, his swamp of a reflecting pond, and somehow thwarting the will of his greatest adversary: the American people.
