Krewe (krü) Noun

A krewe is any group or organization of friends who would like to band together to host a Mardi Gras ball, ride on a Mardi Gras parade float, walk in a parade and participate in social events throughout the year.

Throws (thrōs) Noun

Throws are strings of beads, doubloons, cups, or other trinkets passed out or thrown from the floats in Mardi Gras parades to spectators lining the streets.

Krewes are an integral part of the Mardi Gras season and very much a part of Manitou’s Carnivale parade tradition. For example, the Manitou Drum Circle krewe traditionally leads the parade following the king and queen and Carnivale letters, setting the tone for this very Manitou event. “In the past few years, we have welcomed new krewes, such as the Krewe Khameleon and Krewe du Mew, and counted on perennial favorites such as Team Tecate and Hash House Harriers to bring their unique swagger,” said Beth Alexander Coons, ManiKrewe committee member.

Krewe registration for the 2025 Carnivale parade is open until February 26. “The more, the merrier – krewes, bands, clubs – all are welcome,” said Coons.

So, if you want to join the Carnivale parade, the ManiKrewe has a few tips for you:

1. Consider forming a permanent krewe that will come to Carnivale year after year. Many krewes are social organizations that also fundraise and donate to nonprofits or a chosen cause throughout the year. They all have unique histories and themes.

2. Name your krewe! Have fun with it! Be distinctive!

3. Keep it G-rated – this is a family event!

4. You can have a motorized vehicle, as long as it is 55cc and under. Think Segways, scooters, or anything of that nature. Again, use your imagination!

5. Put your spin/interpretation on the parade’s theme, whether that’s costumes, throws, music, etc. This year’s theme: Cirque du Manitou. There is an awards ceremony after the parade, so bring your best!

6. Signage! Have a banner or a sign-bearer with your krewe’s name.

7. Bring something to throw!

From its inception, Manitou Springs Carnivale has always been about community and art. Drummers, belly dancers, skaters, bicyclists, extreme costumers, artists, musicians and even emus!
