After a couple of weeks of madness, some think that our democracy is threatened by the antics of septuagenarian President Trump and his fellow scammers. Republican, Democrats or unaffiliated – we’re all aboard the U.S.S. Donald Trump, steaming recklessly to an unknown destination.

Think of Botany Bay, the destination for English convicts sent to serve their prison time in Australia. Here’s a stanza from the song “Botany Bay” that celebrates their voyages:

There’s the captain as is our commander

There’s the bo’sun and all the ship’s crew,

There’s the first- and the second-class passengers,

And what we poor convicts go through

The convicts had no idea where they were going, other than to a strange and distant land. Neither do we, although almost half of those who bothered to vote didn’t want Trump to command the ship. Too bad for them – the majority rules!

That said, many of his fellow elected oldsters want him to answer a question about the worshipful minions that he has appointed to high federal offices: Who are these crazies, anyway?

As one who was born on the day that Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to an unprecedented third term in office, and celebrated his 84th birthday the day Trump was elected to a second (and hopefully final!) term, I’ve seen and met many Presidents. All were sober, serious and qualified for the office, including Trump when he was first elected in 2016. But just as Joe Biden’s sudden dementia disqualified him from running for another term, the demented Trump of 2025 is now mesmerized by scammers, opportunists, and newly hatched pro-Trumpers. Kash Patel, Robert F. Kennedy jr., Pete Hegseth…not exactly the pick of the litter.

We’re all aboard the U.S.S. Donald Trump, steaming recklessly to an unknown destination.

It looks like the lunatics have taken over the insane asylum, but their own incompetence has slowed things down. That may not last forever, so we’ll have to depend upon the intelligence, resilience and courage of those who can rein in the President’s follies – Congress, the Supreme Court, the Republican Party and even some of his hand-picked servants. Those are weak reeds – the Court is unlikely to restrain the beloved leader, the GOP is just another appendage of Trumpworld and his servants are submissive – though they’ve yet to equal Jim Jones and Jonestown, and hopefully they never will.

Trump’s needs are simple: more billions flowing into his coffers, more respect and adulation, and years in purgatory or jail for his opponents. He also wants everlasting fame, as the guy who renamed the Gulf of Mexico, annexed Greenland, fired millions of useless bureaucrats and destroyed the Democratic Party.

Alas, Trump is his own worst enemy. By hiring incompetents and believing their b.s., he’s put himself on a path to ruin. He’d do better to soldier on with stolid Washington bureaucrats and experienced advisors, go to Mar-a-Lago every weekend, and enjoy the time he has before the grim reaper taps him on the shoulder.

Don, neither of us are getting any younger – so maybe turn over the entire mess to the Vance kid and let him screw up the country or save it.

Perhaps Trump would like to take a few billion and buy the Denver Broncos, if the Walmart heirs are willing to sell. As a Broncos fan, I’d advise him to remake their roster, and find ways to attract talented players despite salary caps and inconvenient regulations. Beat down the Kansas City Chiefs, win four consecutive NFL championships, become one of Taylor Swift’s best friends and be forever lionized by every Colorado resident.

And forget Greenland – when Colorado residents make a simple geographical re-name request to President Vance, he’ll be glad to make the change. Sorry Zebulon, but your time has passed. Colorado Springs shall forever bask in the shadow of Trump’s Peak!
